April 2, 2012 - Nufern has been awarded one of two honorable mentions for the CLEO/LFW Innovation Award, for the submission titled “Holmium Doped Active Optical Fibers for High Power 2.1 μm Fiber Lasers”. This achievement demonstrates that Nufern continues to be recognized as an innovation leader in specialty optical fiber. The award was presented to Nufern on May 8, during the CLEO conference.

Nufern is the first to launch Ho-doped fibers as standard products in two core/clad geometries – 25/250 and 40/400 μm fibers. This new generation of Holmium doped LMA fibers is based on traditional silica fiber technology and so is compatible with existing fiber component technologies such as fiber Bragg gratings, and fiber couplers. As well as traditional fusion splicing and recoating technologies. In addition it is compatible with commercially available standard high power pump sources based on fiber coupled diode bars and single emitter technologies making the technology cost effective as a new laser source for the near IR wavelengths >2.1 μm.
“This honorable mention highlights the growing interest and importance of lasers, in particular fiber lasers, operating in the longer wavelength regions” says Dr. Adrian Carter, CTO of Nufern. “The introduction of a range of standard Holmium doped silica fibers, is the direct result of many years of R&D with groups such as the Defense Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) in Australia who were one of the first to recognize the benefits of these fibers for high power lasers operating >2.1μm.”
Ho-doped fibers enable new applications for fiber lasers by extending the operating wavelength range of fiber lasers to 2150 nm. The previous generation of silica fibers are not capable of operating at high power levels at near-IR wavelengths longer than 2.1 µm. This new generation of Holmium doped LMA fibers is specifically designed to satisfy this requirement. A recent collaboration with DSTO has already demonstrated >100W at wavelengths >2.1 μm, a wavelength that is required for medical lasers, many of the Military/Aerospace applications including countermeasures, and generation of mid-IR using non-linear conversion. We expect further power scaling and pulsed-fiber-laser work to advance rapidly based on this fiber technology.
