Nufern Expands Large Mode Area Fiber Series With Short Pulse Amplifier Double-Clad Fiber - Optimized for High Pulse Energy Operation

MUNICH - June 23, 2003 - Nufern Expands Large Mode Area Fiber Series With Short Pulse Amplifier Double-Clad Fiber - Optimized for High Pulse Energy Operation. Nufern, the largest independent manufacturer of application-specific optical fiber, introduces a double-clad fiber specifically optimized for short pulse amplification where fiber length is a critical design factor. An expansion of Nufern’s large-mode-area (LMA) fiber series, this LMA fiber features a 30 µm core diameter with 0.06 NA, 250 µm cladding with 0.46 NA, and achieves a (cladding) pump absorption of ~ 2 dB/m at 915 nm (~ 6.5dB/m at 975 nm). The 30/250 fiber is available in two versions - polarization maintaining (PM), using panda-type stress elements to deliver a birefringence in excess of 1.5 X 10-4, or standard double-clad (non-PM).

According to Nufern laser fiber product line manager, Mike O’Connor, short pulse fiber amplifiers typically amplify pulses in the nano-second regime or less, are capable of delivering good beam quality, and can be considered a low-cost replacement for current Q-switched Nd-YAG lasers that are widely used in materials processing, LIDAR and range finding applications.

“ In short pulse laser applications, fiber length is a critical issue due to very high peak powers - which is in contrast to the high average power that the rest of our LMA fibers are optimized to deliver,” says O’Connor. “We designed the new 30/250 LMA fiber with this market in mind. The high pump absorption (dB/m) enables very short, fiber amplifier lengths without sacrificing efficiency. As with all the fibers in our LMA series, short pulse fiber is available in a PM format allowing our double-clad fibers to operate with a stable single polarization output which is highly desirable for a range of short pulse amplifier designs.”
