Nufern Introduces Higher-Power 30/400 Double-Clad Fiber - Optimized for Increased CW Output Power

Munich - June 23, 2003 - Nufern Introduces Higher-Power 30/400 Double-Clad Fiber - Optimized for Increased CW Output Power. Nufern, the largest independent manufacturer of application-specific optical fiber, introduces an addition to its large-mode-area (LMA) fiber series designed to deliver the highest CW power in its Ytterbium-doped double-clad product line. Nufern’s 30/400 fiber features a 30 µm core diameter with 0.06 NA, a 400 µm cladding with 0.46 NA, and operates at CW lasing powers in excess of 400 W. Nufern’s 30/400 fiber is available in two versions - polarization maintaining (PM) double-clad, using panda-type stress elements to deliver a birefringence in excess of 3.0 X 10-4 or standard double-clad (non-PM).
According to Nufern product line manager for laser fibers, Mike O’Connor, high-power, single polarization, fiber lasers and amplifiers, operating upwards of hundreds of watts output power with good mode quality, are seen as low-cost replacements for Nd-YAG lasers, which are widely used in materials processing applications, such as marking and welding.

“In many high-power fiber laser and amplifier applications, the higher the non-linear threshold the better for increased CW output power,” says O’Connor. “This latest addition to our double-clad fiber series is capable of operating at the highest CW powers possible, and at the same time, delivering good beam quality. As with all fibers our double-clad series, this latest high-power addition is available in a PM format to operate with a stable single polarization output at unparalleled output powers.”
