EAST GRANBY, CT - January 23, 2006 — Nufern, the largest independent manufacturer of fiber intensive sub-assemblies and specialty optical fibers, announced today the expansion of their “eye-safe” double clad fiber family with the release of a new thulium (Tm) doped double clad fiber and an erbium-ytterbium (Er/Yb) co-doped double clad fiber.

The erbium-ytterbium co-doped LMA-EYDF-25/300 and the thulium-doped LMA-TDF-25/250 fibers offer high power, high efficiency single mode gain at 1550 and 2000 nm, respectively.  The 25/300 and 25/250 core/clad ratios are ideal in the design of short length pulsed amplifiers generating high pulse energies and peak powers.

“The market for fiber lasers and amplifiers with “eye safe” wavelengths is one of the fastest growing and highest potential areas for fiber based products. Range finding and LIDAR are two applications specific to the military with emerging commercial applications in the medical and industrial markets too numerous to mention,” said Andy Held, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  “These “eye-safe” wavelengths cannot be accessed using conventional bulk lasers and so represent a huge growth potential for fiber-based technologies. Nufern has released these two products in response to customer needs and represents our commitment to supporting and enhancing this product line that was initiated with our SM-EYDF-7/130, PM-EYDF-7/130, PM-EYDF-18/250 and MM-TDF-25/250 fibers.”
