EAST GRANBY, CT - May 18, 2004 - Nufern, the largest independent manufacturer of fiber intensive fiber laser modules and specialty optical fibers, announced today the latest in Nufern’s line of photosensitive fibers - a Polyimide coated Cladding Mode Free (CMF-P) fiber. The presence of cladding modes in standard polyimide coated fibers limits the number of channels that can be simultaneously monitored in a WDM-distributed sensing network. Nufern’s CMF-P fiber enables WDM structural and geophysical sensing by eliminating all cladding modes and offering a polyimide coating for operation at high temperatures and harsh operating environments. CMF-P is best utilized for fiber Bragg grating-based sensor applications such as measurement of structural changes, down hole geothermal and stress strain gauges where conditions are less than ideal.
""Eliminating cladding modes allows tighter channel spacing for higher data acquisition rates,"" said Dr. Adrian Carter, Nufern’s Chief Technology Officer. ""The polyimide coating makes the fiber extremely durable under harsh environments encountered in sensing applications where standard coatings do not survive.""
CMF-P fiber is mode-matched to SMF28 for compatibility with telecommunications equipment. As with all Nufern products, this newest addition to the photosensitive product family offers tight optical and mechanical tolerances, provides high uniformity and lot-to-lot consistency.
