EAST GRANBY, CT / ANN ARBOR, MI, Jan. 26, 2004 - Nufern, a leading independent manufacturer of fiber laser fiber laser modules and specialty optical fibers, has acquired a license from IMRA America, Inc. for amplification technology that enables Nufern to offer a wide variety of optical fiber fiber laser modules basedon its specialty fibers.

Nufern licensed IMRA America’s U.S. Patent No. 5,818,630 for “Single-Mode Amplifiers and Compressors Based on Multi-Mode Fibers.” The fiber laser modules are based on Nufern’s Large Mode Area (LMA), Double-Clad (DC) fibers. IMRA America, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., is a world leader in the research and development, manufacturing and application of ultra-fast and short-pulsed fiber lasers. Nufern is based in East Granby, Conn.

Nufern’s LMA DC fibers have established industry performance standards for high-power/high-energy fiber lasers and amplifiers used in a diverse range of industries. Nufern produces standard or customized fiber fiber laser modules for OEMs for any application based on Nufern LMA fibers, an important value-added service with considerable advantages to OEMs.

"This IMRA technology enables Nufern to offer more value-added fiber fiber laser modules to optical amplifier manufacturers requiring enhanced performance and power-scaling attributes," said Martin F. Seifert, president and CEO of Nufern. "We believe that our fiber laser module capabilities provide a great deal of value to our current and future customers. We are honored to build upon our long association with IMRA’s highly respected team of research and development scientists."

"IMRA has a long history of leadership in the ultra-fast research arena that has generated a tremendous amount of intellectual property and know-how," said Takashi Omitsu, president of IMRA America. "This agreement is one of our first steps in accelerating the commercialization of this technology by making it widely available through additional parties. We believe that the combination of our intellectual property and Nufern’s exceptional specialty fiber capabilities is a perfect fit."
