Nufern Introduces the First in a New Generation of Yb-Doped LMA Fibers

EAST GRANBY, CT – January 21, 2010 - Nufern, a leading U.S. manufacturer of specialty optical fibers and fiber lasers/amplifiers, announced today it is introducing the first of its new Generation VIII series of Yb-doped LMA fibers.

The new Generation VIII series of Yb-doped LMA fibers is based on the newest glass composition, the result of extensive engineering efforts over the years, and initially includes the industry standard 20/400 (20μm core and 400μm clad), 25/400 and 25/250 fibers, available in both PM and non-PM designs. This latest generation of Yb-doped LMA fibers maintains the same key optical specifications as previous LMA fibers, but also incorporates the latest glass technology for high efficiency and robust fiber laser/amplifier operation in the most demanding of industrial applications.

“Since we introduced the industry’s first standard Yb-doped LMA fibers in 2003, our glass scientists have been constantly striving to improve the key performance characteristics our customers desire, namely high efficiency and robust high power operation,” says Dr. Adrian Carter, CTO and Asia/Pacific Sales Director. “By introducing this latest generation of Yb-doped fibers, we are responding to customers’ requirements for the same high quality fiber product in terms of optical and mechanical parameters, but incorporating the very latest in glass technology for robust industrial laser performance at high power levels.”

Throughout the remainder of this year Nufern will introduce other fibers in the Generation VIII family, and in the years ahead continue its R&D efforts to constantly improve fiber technology across all its glass families, spanning its Yb-doped fibers through to Tm and Er:Yb doped LMA fibers. All these fibers are manufactured to exceptionally tight mechanical and optical tolerances. The resulting uniformity and efficiency helps to ensure high yield when the fiber is used in device manufacturing. All Nufern fibers are produced under an ISO 9001:2000 certified quality management system.
