Extreme duty, bend-insensitive, and/or Rad-Hard communication and sensor fibers

Nufern has used its experience in the supply of aerospace, military, and industrial fiber optics to create a new family of fibers designed to be more "wire-like" than previously thought possible. NuWIRE™ specialty fibers are designed to have long life (22 year design) and deliver outstanding performance in applications where temperature changes are extreme and rapid, and where shock, stress, and vibration are routine. NuWIRE can be deployed in applications with an elevated risk of chemical attack from organic and inorganic solvents. Many of the NuWIRE fibers are designed to operate with the same service life in spite of long term or highest level ionizing radiation exposure.

Life Expectancy

Fiber life expectancy is enhanced by manufacturing in an ultra-clean environment in which airborne particles, temperature, and humidity are controlled very precisely. The result is a minimization of low strength proof test breaks, and a maximization of the fiber strength. Both Telcordia and the new Cost 218 models show exemplary life expectancy.

Festoon Architecture

Convoluted routing is typical in NuWIRE fiber applications. As such, a benchmark application has been developed for bend insensitive single mode fiber (worst case) festooned applications. These specially coated fibers are designed for inclusion in tube raceways, tight buffer, and loose tube cable constructions that meet smoke, flammability, and toxicity regulations for tactical, aircraft, commercial, and industrial applications.

*Nufern recommends a minimum bend radius of 13 mm for long length, long term deployment. However for localized point bends, such as 1cm diameter festoon anchors, COST 218 predicts Nufern fiber will survive tighter bends with a 22 year life expectancy and 100 ppm FIT.

Uniformity & Tolerances

All NuWIRE fibers are made to exacting specifications and exhibit excellent uniformity of both optical and mechanical properties. This attribute contributes to NuWIRE applications having deterministic, highly repeatable features and performance in the most demanding applications.

Radiation Hardness & High Temperature Performance

Nufern NuWIRE fiber products are electromagnetic pulse immune and are not subject to static electricity discharge failure or negative effects as a result of very high or extremely high EM field intensities. All results published are without carbon or other semiconductor coatings.

The NuWIRE family includes a variety of rad-hard and radiation resistant fibers. These pure silica core fibers can withstand extended exposure to extreme levels of gamma radiation and other ionizing radiation, with minimal adverse effects on optical performance.

Nufern NuWIRE fibers come standard with our proprietary High Temperature Acrylate coatings that are made with oxidative inductive temperatures in excess of 200°C and are rated for a 22 year lifetime at 125°C. These same fibers are rated to perform as advertised down to -55°C. Many of these fibers are also available with Silicone or Polyimide coatings for higher and wider temperature range applications.
