ANAHEIM, Calif. - March 19, 2002 - Nufern Unveils Line of Metalized Optical Fibers - Provides Excellent Plating-to-Fiber Adhesion and High Bending Ductility Nufern, an independent provider of application-specific optical fiber, has released its line of metalized optical fibers for use in soldered ferrule packages such as diode lasers, external modulators, and receiver modules. Providing plating-to-fiber adhesion of >3 lbs. and ductility in bending of >1.3%, Nufern metalized pigtails are available with Nufern's application-specific fibers and many standard telecommunication fibers.
This product line is another example of our range of in-house production, said Nufern Vice President of Operations, Dr. Kanishka Tankala. With the unique plating processes and statistical process controls we have in place, we are able to provide customers with the kind of highly-engineered, repeatable, tight specification, application-specific products they require, even at high volumes.
Sealed with a dual nickel/gold layered coating, these metalized products are designed specifically for applications in which hermeticity is essential. An electroless nickel layer, 3-6 µm thick, is adhered to and provides a moisture barrier to the glass, while an electroless gold layer, 0.1-0.4 µm thick, provides oxidation protection and acts as the flux during the soldering process.
Nufern's manufacturing capability allows for customized metalized fiber and plating lengths. Metalized fibers are available in scissor-cut or custom-end shapes. Nufern utilizes a class 1000 clean room for pigtail production. As with all Nufern products, Nufern's metalized fibers provide high lot-to-lot uniformity and are tested to Telcordia standards.
