STORRS, CT – April 29, 2011 - Nufern, a leading U.S. manufacturer of specialty optical fibers, fiber lasers & amplifiers and fiber optic gyro coils was a proud sponsor of the University of Connecticut’s Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Project Program. The UConn Design Project Program offers students the opportunity to work on real-life engineering projects for company sponsors. 28 different companies sponsored a total of 41 projects this year.

The UConn Mechanical Engineering Design Team, consisting of undergraduate students Andrew Severson, Sean Lynch and Thuc Bui, won a tie for first prize in the Senior Design competition held on April 29, 2011. The project, entitled “Manufacturing a Low Cost High Performance Fiber Optic Gyro Coil,” used modern vision control systems to enhance the speed and precision of winding fiber optical coils. “We thank them, Dr. Robert Gao and Dr. Thomas Barber from the University of Connecticut, for the opportunity to work with them and look forward to many future projects” says Martin Seifert, Nufern’s President.
