Nufern, a leading U.S. manufacturer of fiber laser and amplifier modules and specialty optical fibers, announced today further expansion of their range of small form-factor polarization maintaining (PM) fibers.
With its numerous inherent advantages including manufacturing scalability and product uniformity PANDA-style PM fibers have long been the preferred technology for all telecommunication applications. However, the extreme birefringence and small form-factor requirements of gyroscope and fiber optic voltage and current sensor applications has long meant that such users have had to rely upon bow-tie or elliptical clad PM fibers. In 2006 Nufern released a suite of compositionally optimized PANDA-style fibers that have since allowed gyroscope manufacturers to take advantage of the many benefits inherent to the PANDA design technology without sacrificing other important attributes such as high birefringence and bend insensitivity which are critical for the manufacture of high precision, high-performance coils.
Nufern has now further expanded this product portfolio with the release of a suite of fibers with reduced coating diameters. By reducing the outer cladding diameters of these fibers from the conventional 165 micron to 125 micron without compromising birefringence or increasing bend-induced crosstalk, we are allowing customers to further substantially reduce the size of their gyroscope and sensor products,
said Adrian Carter, Chief Technical Officer.
